So your iPhone 17 Air isn't charging. You've plugged it in, tried different cables, maybe even given it a tap or two. Don't worry, this is one of the most common issues with the iPhone 17 Air, and most of the time you can fix it at home without any tools.
Whether you're dealing with a dead battery that won't wake up, a USB-C port that's acting up, or a MagSafe charger that's stopped working, we'll walk through the fixes from quickest to most involved.
Force Restart Your iPhone 17 Air
Start here. A force restart clears out temporary software bugs that can block the charging circuit. It takes about 30 seconds and fixes the problem more often than you'd expect.
Quickly press and release Volume Up, then quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Once it boots back up, plug it in and see if the charging icon shows up.
This is especially useful for the iPhone 17 Air because a known firmware bug in iOS 26.4.2 can cause intermittent charging failures. A force restart often clears that right up.
Clean the USB-C Port
Lint and dust love to pack into the USB-C port over time. Grab a flashlight and look inside. If you see debris, turn the phone off, then use a wooden or plastic toothpick to gently scrape it out. Don't use metal, it can damage the contacts.
Compressed air from a safe distance works too. Tap the phone gently with the port facing down to shake loose anything stuck. If the port looks damaged or the cable still feels loose after cleaning, you'll need a technician to take a look.
Try a Different Cable and Adapter
You need to figure out whether the problem is your cable, your adapter, or your wall outlet. The iPhone 17 Air supports up to 40W wired charging, so use an Apple-certified USB-C cable and at least a 20W adapter. Knockoff cables are a common cause of charging issues on this model.
Swap the cable with one you know works. Try a different wall adapter, or plug into a computer's USB-C port. Also remove your phone case, thick or magnetic cases can block the connection.
Check Your Charge Limit Setting
Like the iPhone 15 and later, the iPhone 17 Air has a Charge Limit feature that stops charging at 80% (or 85%, 90%, 95%) to extend battery life. If your phone charges but won't go past a certain percentage, this is why.
Go to Settings > Battery > Charging and set the limit to 100% if you want a full charge. There's also Optimized Battery Charging in the same menu, it delays past 80% until right before you normally unplug. You can turn it off, but keeping it on is better for long-term battery health.
Wait If the Battery Is Completely Dead
If your iPhone 17 Air's battery hit absolute zero, it won't show any signs of life when you first plug it in. That's normal. Leave it connected to a wall charger for at least 15 to 30 minutes.
But here's a trick specific to the iPhone 17 Air: if the screen stays black, attach a magnetic battery pack (Qi2 or MagSafe) to the back of the phone. That can wake it up enough for the wired charging to kick in. Once it responds, try cable charging again or just keep it on the wireless pad.
If nothing shows up after 30 minutes, perform a force restart while it's still plugged in.
Try MagSafe or Qi2 Wireless Charging
If wired charging isn't working, wireless charging can tell you whether the problem is your USB-C port or something else. The iPhone 17 Air supports Qi2 and MagSafe at up to 20W wireless. Place it on a wireless charger, the magnets should snap it into place automatically.
Remove any thick cases or metal plates that might block the connection. Use at least a 20W adapter for the wireless charger to reach full speed. If the phone gets warm during charging, it may slow down, that's temperature protection kicking in.
If wireless charging works but USB-C doesn't, your port likely needs repair.
Update to the Latest iOS Version
A known firmware issue in iOS 26.4.2 causes intermittent charging failures on the iPhone 17 Air. Apple may have already released a fix in a later update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates.
If your phone won't turn on, connect it to a Mac (Finder) or PC (Apple Devices / iTunes) and click Check for Update from there.
Charge With the Phone Turned Off
Sometimes a background app or process interferes with charging. Turn your iPhone 17 Air off completely, then plug it in. If it starts charging normally, you know it's a software issue. This also charges faster since nothing else is drawing power.
Restore Your iPhone (Last Resort)
If you've tried everything and it still won't charge, a full restore can wipe out deep software glitches. Back up your data first, this erases everything.
To enter Recovery Mode: turn off your iPhone, connect it to your computer with a USB-C cable, then press and hold the Side button and Volume Down together for about 20 seconds until the recovery screen appears. Then choose Restore in Finder or iTunes.
After the restore, test charging again. If it still doesn't work, the hardware is likely the culprit and you'll need to visit an Apple Store or authorized service provider.
